TRACING AND TREATING GLAUCOMA Glaucoma, increased pressure within the eye, may destroy the optic nerve, cause the eye to enlarge and crush the cells of the retina. Glaucoma can make a dog go blind in just a few days if the pressure is very high. Early detection of elevated pressure is the only way to control glaucoma. Normal eye pressure for a dog or a cat is 10-20 mmHg. A pressure over 25 mmHg is considered glaucoma. Glaucoma symptoms are subtle and can mimic other eye diseases. Immediate IOP measurement should be a part of the routine for dogs and cats with dilated pupils, enlargement of the eye, cloudiness within the cornea, excessive tearing, visual impairment or any head or eye trauma.
